Appearance

Dress & Grooming Policydress code
Presenting a professional appearance puts guests at ease and helps them feel comfortable approaching us with questions or concerns. Our appearance demonstrates our passion and contributes to providing extraordinary experiences for our guests.
The guidelines below represent the minimum standards that are in place for all Canyons Guides. Due to the nature of some departmental operations and the general expectations of our guests, some departments may have more specific guidelines in addition to these guidelines. Your supervisor or department head is responsible for establishing a reasonable dress code appropriate to the job you perform. We appreciate everyone taking personal responsibility to adhere to these guidelines.

  • Personal Hygiene: Good personal hygiene is required and personal hygiene habits, such as bathing and brushing teeth, must be practiced daily. Offensive body odor and poor personal hygiene is not acceptable.
  • Hair: Hair must be clean, neatly trimmed and groomed and of a natural color. Exotic hair coloring, partially shaven heads, dreadlocks, etc., will not be permitted at any time when visible to a guest. For men, hair cannot extend below the collar. For positions where wearing a hat is acceptable, hair longer than the collar must be put up in a company approved hat. Excessive use of hair products should be avoided. For women, hair should be kept out of the face and may be required to be tied back for safety reasons.
  • Mustaches, Beards and Sideburns: Full beards, mustaches, or goatees are permitted if fully grown. All beards, mustaches and goatees must be neatly trimmed daily. Facial hair cannot extend more than 1/2 inch from the face. Other facial hair, such as soul patches and chops, are not acceptable. Neck hair should be shaved daily. Male Guides without a full beard must shave daily. Sideburns must be neatly trimmed and are permitted to the bottom of the earlobe following their natural contour.
  • Cosmetics and Nails: Excessive makeup is not permitted. Makeup should be subtle. Only neutral shades of makeup are allowed. Nails should be neatly trimmed and conservative in length with no nail art. As with makeup, fingernail polish should be subtle.
  • Perfume and Cologne: Perfume, cologne, and aftershave lotion should be used moderately or avoided altogether as some individuals may be sensitive to strong fragrances.
  • Jewelry: Excessive jewelry should be avoided. For women, one matching earring in each lobe is acceptable. Earrings cannot extend more than 1 inch below the ear. All other visible body piercings, including tongue piercings and men's earrings, are prohibited and must be removed during work hours. Gauged piercings are not permitted. Two rings on each hand, one bracelet on each wrist, and one necklace are acceptable. In addition, no jewelry should be worn that presents a safety hazard to the professional.
  • Name Tags: Your name tag is an important part of your uniform and is to be worn and visible at all times while on duty. It should be worn on the right side of your uniform or on the opposite side of The Canyons Logo. Your name tag will have your first name and your home city and state if you are from the United States, and your home country if you are from outside the United States. Please report a loss of your name tag to your supervisor immediately. A replacement will be made as soon as possible.
  • Tattoos: No visible tattoos are permitted. Tattoos on parts of the body not normally covered by clothing must be covered in a manner approved by your supervisor.
  • Smoking: Smoking is prohibited while in a Canyons uniform or while wearing your nametag. If you wish to smoke you must remove or cover your uniform and you may only smoke in designated smoking areas.
  • Equipment: Equipment that is required to perform your job functions, such as a snowboard, skis or a helmets, must be free of decals and logos from other companies (excluding the logo of the equipment's manufacturer), as well as free from language considered vulgar, offensive or abusive.

Uniforms
Certain Guides will be provided uniforms by The Canyons. Uniform requirements may vary with each department and at different times of the year. A more detailed uniform policy may be published from time to time explaining the applicable policy for that season. You should report any damage or theft of your uniform to your supervisor immediately.

The Canyons uniform standards:

  • Wear it at all times as required.
  • Keep it clean, unwrinkled and presentable.
  • Pants must be worn around the waist. No undergarments can be showing.
  • Wear only Company approved hats.
  • Durable uniform items such as coats, jackets and pants may NOT be worn off property when not working and may NOT be worn while off duty on resort property – especially in bars, taverns, etc.
  • Skiing in uniform is only permitted if pre-approved or required.
  • Smoking or chewing tobacco in uniform is not permitted.
  • Wearing headphones while in uniform is not permitted unless required to by management.
  • Gum chewing and eating sunflower seeds in uniform or when wearing name tag is not permitted.
  • Ski and snowboard helmets are recommended.

Nothing besides a name tag and Canyons issued pins may be worn on the uniform.

As part of the uniform, some Guides may be issued a baseball hat or beanie. You may be required to purchase replacement hats. All hats are to be worn in the manner in which they were designed. For example, baseball caps are to be worn with the bill to the front and not turned up; beanies with the logo facing forward, centered on the forehead. No other headgear other than that which is required for safety purposes or has been selected for the current ski season and issued by The Canyons may be worn while on duty.

Inappropriate Attire
In questionable situations, management retains the right to decide whether your attire is appropriate. If the attire is inappropriate, you will not be allowed to work until the attire is made appropriate. Repeated instances of inappropriate attire are subject to disciplinary action.

While at work, with the exception of departments wearing Canyons uniforms, only promotional clothing from The Canyons may be worn. Clothing with other company logos (excluding the brand manufacturer of the garment) may not be worn. The Canyons promotional attire and attire from sponsors of current events may be worn on the day(s) of the event only. See your supervisor for details.

Each Guide is completely and solely responsible for the return of the entire uniform that was issued to them. The cost for any missing items may be deducted from the Guide's final paycheck. Each Guide is also responsible for taking proper precautions for the maintenance of their uniform; damages beyond normal wear and tear will be charged to the Guide.
